Remedios Varoの本『El Tejido de los Sueños/夢の織物』

断片的には公表されてきたが、Varoの書簡などを編纂したもの。

5月15日にスペインのEditorial Renacimientoから刊行されている。

Varoの死後、発見されたノート類には、ありありとVaroの複雑な人格を投影する書簡、短い物語、草稿などがあり、苦悩ながら諧謔に満ちた素直な文書から、画家Remedio Varo全体のイメージが浮かび上がる内容らしい。

表紙の作品は《Simpatía (la rabia del gato)》 (1955)。

Diego Riveraが描いたEmma Hurtadoの肖像画とDiego Riveraをカバーに使ったこの本は、Emma Hurtadoの甥で建築家の
Juan Hurtado y Santacruzが、Emma Hurtadoの家族やDiego Riveraとの関係を纏めた「Mi vida con Diego. Emma Hurtado, viuda de Diego Rivera/ディエゴとの人生 ディエゴの未亡人エンマ・ウルタド」（Editorial Parmenia, 2017, México)である。

Emmaは、Diegoにとっては4番目（いや正確に言うと5番目か）の妻にあたる。Frida Kahloの死後1年後にEmmaと結婚している！

この4月まで、メキシコのMuseo de Arte Modernoで“Memorias de un retrato, Emma Hurtado y Diego Rivera/ある肖像画の記憶 エンマ・ウルタドとディエゴ・リベラ”が開催されていた。

Emma Hurtadoは、1946年からDiego Riveraのエージェントをしていた。

Carmen Posadas 『La hija de Cayetana』

　ゴヤのアクアチント≪La duquesa de Alba teniendo en sus brazos a María de la Luz/マリア・デ・ラ・ルスを腕に抱くアルバ公爵夫人≫（1794-1795）。

　抱かれている少女は、キューバのプランテーションの黒人奴隷の混血の娘（ムラータ）で、13代アルバ公爵夫人（1762-1802）はこの少女を養子に迎えている。

　この少女はMaría de la Luzと言い、少女についてあまり記述は残されていないが、キューバ奴隷の母親とともにスペインに連れられていかれ、劇場主によってこの二人は買われた。母親はマドリッドにある女優の家で働き、少女は何故かアルバ公爵夫人の傍で王宮で暮らすようなったという。

　余り知られていないこの物語を、スペインの小説家Carmen Posadasがアルバ公爵夫人の世話をしていたRafaela Velázquez（通称La Beata、敬虔深い人という意味）が残した記録を基に、小説『La hija de Cayetana』（Espasa）にして2016年に出している。因みに、La Beataはゴヤの《La duquesa de Alba y su dueña》（1795、プラド美術館）にアルバ公爵夫人とともに描かれている。

Tarsila do Amaralは、サンパウロ州内陸部のCapivariで裕福なエリート階級の家庭に生まれ、幼少時代にはしばしば家族と旅行でヨーロッパを訪れている。

サンパウロでアカデミズム写実画家たちから絵を学び（1916年）、その後、パリに移り、美術学校、Académie Julianでも学んでいる（1920年）。

フランスから帰国直前のブラジルでは、ヨーロッパのモダニズムをもたらした芸術祭「Semana de arte moderna（近代芸術週間）」が開催されていた（1922年）。その後に続く活動にすぐさまAmaralは参加する。

詩人のOswald de Andradeとは、Amaralの友人でモダニズム画家のAnita Malfattiを通じて知り合り、Amaralのパートナーとなる。

1922年後半パリに戻ったAmaralは、Fernand Léger、Albert Gleizes、André Lhoteのキュービストの作家たちに師事し、そしてPablo Picasso、Giorgio de Chirico、Constantin Brancusiらと交流する。

その後、Amaralは、ブラジルの芸術遺産研究のため、1923年にブラジルに戻り、リオデジャネイロやミナスジェライスを訪れている。

Amaralは、Legerから影響を受けた幾何学主義を用いて、1924年から28年にかけて、人々、都市や地方の生活を鮮明な色使いで描いた連作《Pau-Brasil》を発表している。

一方、Andradeは、ブラジルの固有木のPau-Brasil（心材が赤い色をした“ブラジルの木”）をタイトルにした詩作（1925年）でデビューしている。彼は、ブラジルのモダニズム美学を表現する上で、Amaralの作品《Pau-Brasil》を作品集の表紙に使っている。

1928年に制作した、Tupi-Guarani語のタイトルを付けた《Abaporú（食人）》からAndradeは触発され、「Manifesto Antropófago（食人運動）」と結びつき、Amaralの作品がそのシンボルとなった。プリミティブズムを謳い、ヨーロッパ文化を喰らい消化することでブラジルのトロピカル美学に置き換えることを主張した。

《Antropofagia》がパリで公開された1928年の翌年、AmaralはAndradeと決別する。1931年にモスクワのMuseum of Modern Western Artで展覧会を開いた。Amaralはソビエト社会リアリズムの影響を受けた一連の作品を1930年代、40年代に制作する。1950年代になると、キュービズムのスタイルに戻り、最後までそのスタイルを保ち続けた。

メキシコシティに生まれ、両親とともに米国シカゴに移住し、East Los Angelesのメキシコ系アメリカ人コミュニティで育つ。

1964年、カルフォルニア大学ロサンジェルス校に入学、翌年にはニューヨークに移り、Art Students LeagesとNew School for Social Researchで学ぶ。

1971年、ロサンジェルスに戻る。その三年後、Otis Art Institute (正式名称Otis College of Art and Design)でMFAの学位を取得する。

1970年代初頭に、チカーノ（メキシコ系アメリカ人）運動に参加する。チカーノ運動は、農業労働者闘争、人権、教育、メキシコ系アメリカ人の社会経済的状況の問題を取り上げた。

Almarazは、米国の労働組合幹部であり公民権活動家のCesar Chávezとともに、United Farm Workers（米国農業労働組合）で1973年から1976年まで活動する。

この時期、ほかのチカーノアーティストたちと同様に、Almarazは、メキシコ系アメリカ人の居住地区で社会問題をテーマにした壁画制作を行っている。

1971年、Almarazは、ロサンジェルスの公園リクリエーション部門の壁画コーディネーターに就く。

1973年には、アーティスト集団Los Fourを、Roberto de la Rocha、Gilbert Luján、Frank Romeroと立ち上げる。またAlmarazは、二誌のチカーノ雑誌「Concilio de arte popular」「Chisme-arte」を創刊している。

メキシコ系アメリカ人の歴史と文化を知ってもらうために、アーティスト集団のLos Fourは、先コロンブス期の神々、グアダルーペ聖母、メキシコ革命の先導者たち、チェ・ゲバラのような英雄たちを描く。

1974年、アーティスト集団Los Fourを取り上げた、美術館展示では初となるチカーノアート展が、Los Angeles County Museum of Artで開催された。Los Fourの活動は1980年まで続いた。

Alamarazの1980年代初期のパステルと油彩の作品は、都市生活のアレゴリーとして自動車事故をテーマにしていた。

彼は動物や強い色で描いた想像上の生物が居る詩的な風景を描いている。晩年の色調を抑えた作品は、罪と贖いに繋がる。

AIDSの合併症でロサンジェルスで1989年世を去る。

Playing with Fire: Paintings by Carlos Almaraz

This book celebrates Carlos Almaraz, one of the most influential Los Angeles artists of the 1970s and 1980s. Playing with Fire: Paintings by Carlos Almaraz is the first full length monograph devoted to an artist known for both his politically engaged cultural production as well as his vibrant, highly sought-after studio art, particularly his scenes of car crashes and pastoral depictions of L.A.’s Echo Park. Among the leading figures whose artistic, cultural, and political motivations catalyzed the Chicano Art movement in the 1970s, Almaraz began his career with works for the United Farm Workers and cofounded the important artists collective Los Four. Although he saw himself as an activist, Almaraz straddled multiple―and often contradictory―identities that drew from divergent cultures and approaches, and his work became less overtly political and more personal, psychological, dreamlike, and even mystical as he evolved artistically. The book features more than 60 works, mostly from the late 1970s through 1989, the year of the artist’s untimely death at age 48, as well as selections from his journals and recollections from numerous colleagues and friends who knew him throughout his career.
